the End-of-Summer edition

August 23, 2021

And here we are still . . . summer . . . hot . . . COVID . . . with a few thoughts to update life at Trinity Church . . .

This Sunday we’ll conclude our summer series looking at D Problems: this week’s emphasis is dissention (actually, our emphasis is on how there should be unity instead of dissention and on how to avoid divisiveness in God’s Church).

Johania will lead our service and preach on Sunday September 5 (and I know, we need to create a more appropriate slide).

I will be in Saskatchewan for my “adopted mother’s” funeral. Mae Kanhai was another of those people of whom you would say “if you look up the word ‘saint’ in the dictionary you’ll see her picture”. She and her husband Roy took in a young waif from the streets, gave him a home, and showed him Jesus. I am forever in their debt . . . and I am not alone: many people learned about love through their example. I will be away for the long weekend but will be back in the office September 7.

Our fall series begins September 12. We’ll be looking at Keys to Kingdom Living . . . beginning with a challenge to radical love. Our service format will change (I’d like to say “slightly”): we are planning for fewer songs at the beginning of the service, our message to start earlier than it has been (at 11:15am), and an extended song session following the message. We will evaluate this format in the future.

Thank you for sending your requests for the songs of worship and praise that you would like to sing . . . we will get to them. And if you aren’t receiving the lyrics to the songs each Sunday but would like them, drop me a line.

We continue to meet Wednesday evenings for a time of prayer together. There is a new ZOOM link: click here . . . or when you open ZOOM in your browser or open the app the Meeting ID is 721 8896 7418; the passcode is HQ1m7M

We are planning Tuesday as a get-together-to-learn night. Each Tuesday there will be a different opportunity to study/discuss/learn. Life is busy; join us as you can (ZOOM links to come):

  • 1st Tuesday: Young Adult Question and Answer
  • 2nd Tuesday: “Traditional” Bible Study
  • 3rd Tuesday: Book Study/Discussion
  • 4th Tuesday: TBD

In September’s book study we will look at Jesus Is ___, by Judah Smith. Click here to order the book from Chapters (it should only take a few days to arrive). Come with questions of your own as we talk about and learn from the challenges offered.

The musical group JCL (Jesus Christ Living) has asked if they can lead in praise and worship in a more informal evening setting. Their first “concert” is scheduled for 7:00 pm September 26 (note date change). They will lead from the sanctuary; for those who cannot attend in person, the musical evening will also be streamed from our Facebook and YouTube sites.

Oh, and a reminder that each month there is an opportunity to give to a special church mission along with our regular tithes and offerings (and thank you for your faithful giving through the summer):

We have designated Haiti for our 2021 compassionate ministries emphasis. All funds directed to compassionate ministries this year will support our compassionate efforts in that country. Rather than waiting until year end as we often do, we will remit offerings for Compassionate Ministries/Haiti in a timely manner throughout the year. Thank you for your generosity in caring for people.
